About Skiathos

Welcome to cosmopolitan Skiathos, with its 50 wonderful beaches, where Alexandros Papadiamantis, the Saint of Greek Literature, was born…

48 square kilometres of land… a circle of beauty and around Alexandros Papadiamantis’ rosy beaches…

The island of livelihood… Skiathos, the paradise of the Aegean, the island of lacy coasts and golden sands; this green diamond is the closest island of the Northern Sporades to the mainland, an all-green island of the north Aegean, east of the Magnesia peninsula, north of Evoia and west of Skopelos, just 2 miles from the coasts of southern Pelion opposite, and 4 miles from Skopelos.

THE NATURE AND LANDSCAPE OF SKIATHOS

Skiathos is an island truly blessed by nature. Its thick vegetation covers almost the entire island mainly with pine trees, olive trees, holly, large sycamore trees, almond trees, vineyards, but also a lot of farming; this, in combination with its low relief and the fact that the dense green comes down to its golden sandy shores, countless and so different from each other, gives it a wonderful landscape of rich natural beauty.

In the south and the west there are leeward bays, while in the north and the east there are rocks and equally amazing beauties, caves and beaches. Palaiokastro of Skiathos in the Kastro area, Lalaria and so many other places that you will get to know through our Webpage.

The pine trees at Mpourtzi demarcate the old harbour and are a landmark of the island.

From this point one can see Agios Nikolas and the bells of the other parishes, Panagia Limnia and the church of the Three Hierarchs. On the other side the Monastery of Panagia Kounistra and the Monastery of Evangelismos, but also many other small country churches pinpoint the religiosity of the island’s residents.

We must mention that at the old port there are many boats (many of which are for excursions) and in the summer yachts also anchor there, creating a beautiful image with Mpourtzi in the background.

Some of these boats are a sample of old Skiathan shipbuilding, as on this island of the Sporades with ample timber from its lavish pine forests there were many shipyards in most of the southern leeward bays, as winds in this area are usually NW and NE. Some of these places are Glyfoneri, Siferi, Ammoudia, Taliagra, and this is where the Skiathans made their boats that brought so much life to the island.

In conclusion…

Skiathos… Skia (shadow) û Athos, as it is in the ôshadow of Athosö (Mount Athos) or due to its rich vegetation that creates shadowy spots… with more than 70 beaches decorating the island, the land of Alexandros Papadiamantis, the Saint of Greek Literature, ôof many pines and many hilltopsö being one of his most representative characterizations of the land he loved so much and was inspired from, a very beautiful island.

We must prepare you for the two images you will witness on the island; on the one hand the northern part which remains unaltered, simple and spare, natural and unexplored as if it is jumping out of PapadiamantisÆ texts, a different Skiathos, its wild beauty literally untouched by tourism; the southern part, on the other hand, with the basic tourist infrastructure spreading over 12 km from the town of Skiathos to Koukounaries, offers the necessary services next to wonderful beaches and coasts… thus making this paradise accessible to all the visitors of the island.

Driving along the road from the town to the well-known Koukounaries and the nearby sands, one thinks that Skiathos is just a very developed tourist island, but this is not the case. The island is suitable for calmness but also for liveliness, for exploring but also for easily accessible joys; the visitor chooses how to move and the choices are many and remarkable. Distances between the two worlds are a matter of just a few minutes…

Skiathos… A truly youthful island (and not only), Skiathos is known for its liveliness, so much on its beaches as at night-time.

The aeroplanes land one after the other it is the only island in the Sporades complex that has an airport. In the summer there are more than 50 flights per week.

SO TO THE POINT… Skiathos… youthful… lively… natural… lacy… golden… a blue-green paradise… awaits you and invites you to get to know her…
