Modern years . The population of the new town began to increase significantly and the 1500 residents became 2000 in 1845. In 1855 town planning began, while a few years earlier, in 1851, Alexandros Papadiamantis was born on Skiathos.

From the Ottoman times to 1914, Skiathos was a municipality.

In 1914 and until 1965 it was a Community, and since 1965 it has been a municipality once more.

During the German occupation the island was almost completely destroyed by the German aeroplanes.

On 14 September 1943 the Germans sink the submarine KATSONIS with V. Laskos and his heroic crew, 7 miles from the castle and north of Skiathos.

Also, one important historical event that marked the island was the setting on fire of the island and the execution of 7 Skiathans in retaliation, a little before the war ended, on 23 August 1944.

After the post-war period, the island of Skiathos developed very quickly financially and socially.
